Research Paper on Being a Doctor
Introduction: A flame sparked a passion early in my life a desire to become a surgeon. My first exposure to the medical field was when I visited my aunt in her residency in Venezuela. ââ¬Å"A surgeon is responsible for the success of his scheduled surgeries. Heââ¬â¢s a leader who coordinates each operation with a highly qualified staff, assesses the patientââ¬â¢s need for surgery and is in charge of his post op recovery (Baylor). â⬠A surgeon possesses qualities above those of a general physician, requiring years of additional schooling.Few choose this path and I hope one day I will succeed in reaching my ultimate goal and to also be able to help people. [pic] Research Process: The career cluster choices offered were business management, construction and health sciences which is the one that captured my attention because a surgeon fits in that category. I was excited because I got to write about something in which I was passionate. My research was primarily based on expan ding my knowledge and getting a deeper insight into the medical career of a surgeon and how to arrive at this destination, which the career cluster helped clarify. The next step was to locate the right person of prominence in the field. Although difficult, my pediatrician helped me find the him. Dr. Schierling is a general surgeon working with the Medical Clinic of North Texas. Knowing that surgeons have many responsibilities, I knew that contacting him early was necessary as well as having back up surgeons. I developed my interview in a thoughtful and detailed manner covering all the requirements making sure I had the right information to write a detailed and informative paper.I sent the interview by email Wednesday and first received his response on Sunday, learning the importance of backups and contacting people early. Dr. Schierlingââ¬â¢s information was exactly what I was looking for; helpful and detailed information which really helped me develop my knowledge about the medic al field. Job Specifics: To become a doctor the path is long and hard. Under normal circumstances you need a four year degree in any university. You can major in anything you want, ââ¬Å"but at least two years of you college experience will be trying to build up your prerequisite credits for med school. It is better if you major in English or science as it will be easier to meet those credits(Schierling)â⬠. In the charts below are the ACT and SAT scores for acceptance into Southwestern University as well as class rank for acceptance. This is one of the thousand universities that offer a four year degree. To get more requirements and learn more about this university you should visit the Southwestern website. First-Year Acceptance Rates By Class Rank (2010) CLASS RANK | |185 students enrolled | |Average undergraduate GPA: 3. 8 | |Average MCAT scores: 11. 15 ( out of a 15 point scale) | Remember that it is not imperative to go to a prestigious med school to be successful (Schie rling)â⬠. ââ¬Å"After Medical School you will apply for residency in surgery in one of the thousands of hospitals across the country. Then after you are matched to a residency program you move to the state and get a license to practice medicine which takes about one year. Residency for surgery is usually five years, then if you want to do a sub specialization it can take about one to two years in a fellowship(Schierling). â⬠While you do your residency you earn about 35,000-41,000 dollars, depending on the area. After you are a surgeon and depending on your specialty your salary can vary from 258,000-700,000 dollars. Hours, traveling and even dress are flexible after med school. ââ¬Å"You also have to remember that surgeons are few and they are always in constant demand. Below are some statistics for job outlooks from the ââ¬Å"Bureau of Labor Statisticsâ⬠: Occupational Title |SOC Code |Employment, 2008 |Projected Employment, 2018 |Change, 2008-18 | | | | | |Number |Percent | |Physicians and surgeons |29-1060 |661,400 |805,500 |144,100 |22 | |Another important responsibility of a surgeon is to be a good businessman. Thinking of the patientââ¬â¢s ability to pay for care always needs to be taken into consideration. ââ¬Å"This brings long hours and a difficult quality of life if you have a family, but the patient always needs to come first. A surgeonââ¬â¢s work week generally consists of a few days in the operating room, some days of patient evaluation and post op care. They also cover emergency calls and sometimes you are on call late at night; loss of sleep and not having the time to eat are normal.Surgeons have opportunities to attain higher positions within the hospital community; chief or head of certain departments. These positions are more managerial and can redefine your role to more leadership and less clinical care. This is a decision that every surgeon needs to make early on in his career. (Schierling)â⬠[pic] Reflection: T he I-Search project was very eye opening and educational. This really encouraged me to start preparing to be more knowledgeable in my subject and choice of university and education.I now understand the surgeonââ¬â¢s general work days and the path to get there. I had the opportunity to meet people in the career field in which I was interested. I also learned about possible secondary career choices such as business management in the health care industry and the career possibilities related to managing a hospital. I discovered that while studying medicine you can also get a secondary degree such as a PHD or an MBA. The survey, therefore did manage to cover a specific interest of mine and it also opened other possibilities.I also learned that to be a doctor ââ¬Å" you have to have good studying an organizational skills to manage all the rigorous training required as well as honesty and a good work ethic. Looking back at all the work I did put into this paper, I would only change one thing. I would have been more organized with my time. A time line would have helped me better approach all this work. This experience will help me in the future by having given me the necessary tools to complete bigger complex projects in an organized manner.

Describe Your Impression Essay
Prior to working in government, I worked in the private sector. In comparison of the two cultures, I realize that politics exist in both cultures and it is a game that I really do not like to play. My impression of the two cultures leave a lot to be desired in the sense that I am one who is not afraid of hard work; I am always committed to the job. However, working in the private sector gave me a greater sense of satisfaction: I could prioritize my work and get things done; there was less bureaucracy. I could determine what was good for the organization, share it with my management who respected what I brought to the table and implement a cohesive strategy that would benefit the organization. Working in government you have to be prepared and committed to the policies that sometime prevent you from completing your job.(i.e. public interference and internal obstacles) in addition to working with people who do not share the same ideals as you. The government mentality of being a paper pusher was a concept that I fight with myself constantly about. My first few years in government, I went above and beyond what was expected of me because I did not like the feeling of being ââ¬Å"unresponsiveâ⬠. Working in government I now see what the mentality is all about. I as an individual am not a paper pusher; I am a results driven hard worker who wants to see the results of my hard work; however, being in government you do not control what gets accomplished by your work ethicââ¬â¢ you only control what is expected of you: meaning ââ¬Å"I do what I am supposed to doâ⬠however what road the journey takes does not depend on me it depends on who is going to benefit from the fruits of my labor. The positive side of the two cultures: Private Sector gives you room to grow based on your commitment to work, There is less beauracy to deal with and most are working toward the same goal. In government, when you are given a task, the positive side is that you know it is for the good of the mass and you can envision the end result.

Positive Guidance
Positive Guidance and Discipline In Classrooms There is a difference in guidance and discipline. Discipline involves teaching and learning. It also comes from the root word ââ¬Å"discipleâ⬠which means a pupil, a follower, or a learner. Guidance is an attempt to change behavior by leading, directing, teaching, and advising. But the two have a connection. The main goal for guidance is self-discipline. Once a child achieves self- discipline, it will increase his or her ability to learn new social skills. They are also given more opportunities to practice those skills on their own rather than having an adult solve every problem or conflict that they have. Children and adults views on discipline are based on Past experiences, cultural values, lack of knowledge and current social values. Before we can guide childrenââ¬â¢s behavior, we must understand the childââ¬â¢s behavior. In my early childhood class we learned that there are two different types of guidance; direct guidance and indirect guidance. Direct guidance is verbal and physical techniques that are used to influence a childââ¬â¢s behavior. Some examples of direct guidance are redirection, distraction, positive reinforcement, encouraging, and limits. Direct guidance strategies will differ between age groups and even for individual children. Indirect Guidance is planning that influences the childââ¬â¢s behavior. Example of indirect guidance strategies are planning, observation, room arrangement, modeling, and age appropriate equipment and materials. Neither direct nor indirect guidance includes punishment. Most negative punishment is unnecessary. It causes pain most of the time and it puts fear in the child. The child will probably grow up being scared of you and that will damage the relationship forever and it would also block positive discipline. It makes the child resent the person who punished them. Punishment also tears away a childââ¬â¢s self-esteem and it offers no possible solutions or explanation to the problem. It makes a child feel like its ok to hurt someone you love. This may leads to problems like abuse, neglect and domestic violence when they grow older. Instead of punishing a child for something they do wrong, try to redirect and guide them on the right thing hat they should be doing. Explain to them in a nice voice that what they are doing is wrong. Tell them how to fix it instead of yelling or spanking. Maybe even a time out could be put into place but this should be used as a type of punishment either. It should be used for reflective purposes. When you send a child to time out they should go off to the side to think about what they did that was wrong. Short time ou ts seem to work best. They should be two to three minutes long. Many people see the quick result of punishment and think it is effective but it isnââ¬â¢t. As we learned in class it just buts a ââ¬Å"band-aidâ⬠on it but it doesnââ¬â¢t fix the problem it just makes it worst. A reaction to punishment is anger. Most of the time children who are punished who to get even. They get even by hitting others. Most people who often get punished are often bullies. They feel as though mommy and daddy take their anger out on me so Iââ¬â¢m going to take my anger out on someone thatââ¬â¢s smaller than me. This creates a major problem in the classroom. They call other children names, ruin other peopleââ¬â¢s work and take their things. When you come across a student like this, as a teacher, you canââ¬â¢t punish him or her because it will cause even more damage. When mommy and daddy uses punishment at home they donââ¬â¢t have to deal with the results but the teacher has to at school. Punishment focuses attention on what not to do rather than what to do. Thatââ¬â¢s why when we made rules charts in class we used positive words instead of negative words like ââ¬Å"noâ⬠. Instead of enforcing rules of what not to do, rules should tell children what to do. For example if you want the children to walk inside, you will say we walk inside. Rules should be simple so children can understand and must be positive. Rules prepare children for a successful living in the future. Having too few rules gives children make children think that they can do whatever they want to do. Sometimes it provokes them to do power struggles and test the limits even harder to get their parents or teacher to use their authority. On the other hand, a great number of rules or being a strict parenting creates an bad relationship between parent and child and fosters feelings of resentment and rejection, which lowers a childââ¬â¢s self-esteem. Besides, excessive control can provoke rebellion, not only toward the parents, but also against other authority figures. Although children may not like the rules, they deserve to receive explanations for limits and expected consequences for breaking the rules. When a child hears a negative statement like, ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t throw the sand out the sandbox ! â⬠what the child really thinking is throw the sand out the sandbox, instead what you told them to do. If you do state a rule in the negative, like ââ¬Å"No hitting! â⬠, but an positive statement with it. In conclusion it is way better to use positive words and positive discipline rather than negative punishment. Punishment causes shame, blame and pain and no one wants that. It would both benefit you as the teacher or parent and the child. Negative discipline only puts a ââ¬Å"band-aidâ⬠over the problem for short term results. The problem is not solved and eventually gets worst in most cases. Take the time out to talk to the child and redirect and guide young children behavior because it will teach them how to act and solve their problems on their own the next time.

Pollution Control Measures Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Pollution Control Measures - Essay Example Consequently, this paper explores the merits of the three pollution control measures to establish the optimal pollution control measure that should be adopted by the countries. Discussion Benefits and marginal costs are compared to establish the amount of pollution that should be accepted in society. This is called the optimal pollution level, where the marginal social costs and marginal social benefits are equal. Similarly, the marginal cost of pollution damage and the marginal cost of pollution control are compared to establish when pollution control measures should be employed. Under this concept, pollution should be reduced if the benefits gained are higher than the control costs (Hoel, 1998). This is as demonstrated in the graphical representation below on the marginal cost of pollution damage versus the marginal cost of pollution control. Qmax in the graph above shows the maximum level of pollution that is expected when pollution control measures are not employed. Thus, the pol lution amount will drop from Qmax when the control policies are introduced in the market. On the other hand, MCD is the marginal cost of damage that is caused by pollution emissions. Similarly, MCC is the marginal cost of control that has the tendency of rising as the levels of pollution fall (Hoel, 1998). The optimal control level is represented by the Q* in the graph, where the MCD and MCC are equal. This is the level at which the pollution control cannot be exceeded since the benefits will be less than the marginal cost of undertaking the pollution control measure. This practice of balancing the marginal cost and benefit is known as the equimarginal principle (Hoel, 1998). Legal regulation is one of the pollution control measures employed by government agencies, which involves setting the emission standards for specific products or industries under the legislative guideline. The major advantage of legal regulation is that it specifies results compared to other control measures (W eyzig, 2009). Thus, it is possible to ensure that producers do not allow a risky level of pollutants. However, this control measure has the potential of experiencing inflexibility when the economic players are required to meet the same standard. This can only work where activities polluting the environment are same. Consequently, pollution tax is effective in an industry that has numerous and different plants. This will involve charging the plants by per unit of emission they make in their production activities. Taxation will be effective in controlling the level of emission since the plants operating in the market will consider reducing the pollution level provided the marginal cost is lower compared to the tax (Tucker, 2011). Under the taxation control measure, the Qmax of pollution before the pollution control measures are introduced will shift to Q1, as reflected in the graph below, when a pollution tax of T1 is introduced. This is because the manufacturers in the market will pr efer to lower their pollution level by undergoing a cost E shown in the graph, instead of paying a tax that is equal to F + E for these units as reflected in the graph above (Tucker, 2011). In addition, the manufacturers will be forced to pay a charge equivalent to B + D for the pollution level of Q1 they cause. This cost is lower than B+ D ââ¬â E+ F that they will be required to pay if they do not reduce their pollution l

The Whiskey Rebellion 1791 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Whiskey Rebellion 1791 - Essay Example Congress agreed and President Washington chose to appoint Henry Knox as the Secretary of War, Thomas Jefferson as the Secretary of State, and Alexander Hamilton as the Secretary of the Treasury. The appointment of Jefferson and Hamilton would later have a great impact as the two had conflicting views about the future role of the American government. It was Hamiltonââ¬â¢s goal and responsibility as Treasurer in this new government to reduce or eliminate the massive debt incurred by the Revolutionary war. Hamilton was a very smart individual. He devised and implemented several strategies in order to reduce the national debt and provide stability to the American economy (Henretta â⬠¦, n.d.). Overall, his policies worked very well and the nation prospered as the debt was paid down. However, his fiscal policies divided the government and the people into distinct groups with opposing political views, those who sided with Hamilton and those who supported Jeffersonââ¬â¢s small government views. One of Hamiltonââ¬â¢s policies included an excise tax on spirits in order to pay the interest on the national debt. This tax did not sit well with western Pennsylvania distillers whose main source of income was the production and sale of whiskey (Whiskey Rebellion, n.d.).

European Business Practice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
European Business Practice - Essay Example These include free movement of goods, free movement of people, free movement of services and free movement/transfer of capita (McCormick, 2011). Some of the benefits are as discussed below. Businesses have greatly benefited from the single market. The EU being a free trade area, single market allows the businesses to operate and conduct their business activities in an unhindered manner. Companies have the freedom to invest in any of the member countries as international trade has been fostered. Goods can be accessed at cheaper prices, and the transportation has become easier due to improved infrastructure (Euromove, 2011). The policies for conducting business between the EU member countries have been made more favourable and hence, companies have increased the rate at which they carry out activities and operations. Countries have also benefited greatly from the European Union. This union has boosted and promoted the development of infrastructure, telecommunications and development of trade centers (Weresa, 2010). One example of a country that has benefited from such is Scotland, which is a member country. In the country, roads have been developed, security has been boosted due to the combined armed forces and the level of living standards has been raised as the EU, through structural funds, has given and funded a big percentage of people who are below the poverty line (McCormick, 2011). Another benefit can be seen in terms of economic growth and creation of employment opportunities. Research conducted shows that between 1992 and 2006, the Single market program fostered development as the European Union GDP rose by 2.2 % to 233 billion euros. This, in return, led to the creation of 2.75 million jobs spread across the member countries (Daneshku, 2014; European Union, 2013). Personal benefits can also be realised from being EU members. One has the unlimited
INTERNATIONAL JOINT VENTURES Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
INTERNATIONAL JOINT VENTURES - Assignment Example In essence, Shanghai General Motors was established in mid 1997 with the initiative of a joint venture with another world leading automotive industry known as General Motors (Anderson 2012). The business relationship was meant to be an equal contribution. This relationship was later sealed with the first automotive assemble in 1999 and the first vehicle been Buick Regal. Four years later, the company was rated as the second largest single market that had hit the market with General Motor products. In this regard, Shanghai General Motors is involved with the assembling of components of vehicles that emanate from parts imported from different corners of the globe particularly from US, Korea, Brazil among other countries that are capable of producing automotive parts across the globe. At times, the company makes orders on these parts in advance because some require lengthy shipping to comply with the orders given by customer in various parts of the world (Klein and Abels 2008). From the re onwards, this joint venture has immensely improved to become Chinaââ¬â¢s largest automotive manufacturing company. ... According to Luo and Yan 2001, it is worth noting that China is among the leading countries that have advanced technologically and thus the automotive industry is not un exception. Of importance to note is that automotive industry is one of the worldââ¬â¢s crucial technological areas as it involves variety of vehicles which are targeted by millions of people globally. Never the less, information gathering from this multi billion company has not been easy because some of their facts keep on fluctuating depending on the behavior of the market and their potential competitors such as Chery and MD Rover. Actually, they believe in coming up with unique brands, which they place into the market without having to advertise first to bar their competitors from coming up with similar brands that might threaten their ever growing market of automotives. In addition, it becomes cumbersome for individuals to easily access their numerous distinct plants where most of the assembling is done in rega rd to their policy. Type of joint venture It is apparent that Shanghai General Motors Company has been one of the biggest car manufacturing companies in china. The company was formed after a successful collaboration between General Motors and SAIC. With continued lack of advanced technology imported to china by other companies, SAIC decided to approach GM with intent of importing top technology to china on the basis that SAIC would help GM to jointly work in china. In this regard, SAIC and GM privately held a joint venture in 1997 and Shanghai GM (SGM) was born. The investment was valued at $ 1.69 billion. In light of this, it is apparent that the privately held joint venture between the two companies improved their performance (Baran, et al 1996). With GM, china was not only a
